Farm to School

The Farm to School Initiative

Fueling Smart and Healthy Students
2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans has reported that school-age children and adolescents are falling short on consuming essential nutrients needed to build strong minds and strong bodies.

Protein is an essential macronutrient that supports muscle growth, stabilizes blood sugar, and provides long-lasting fuel. It plays a crucial role in brain function, neurotransmitter production, and overall cognitive performance. When kids start their day with a protein-rich breakfast, they are more likely to have stable energy levels throughout the day, stay focused, and have less mood swings. A healthy breakfast is associated with improved memory and reduced absenteeism for students.

On the flip side, a breakfast high in sugar and refined carbohydrates (all processed cereals, pastries, and muffins) can lead to energy crashes, difficulty concentrating, and increased hyperactivity and impulsiveness.

High Quality Food From Local Regenerative Farms
Regenerative farming focuses on soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem resilience, resulting in crops and animal products with higher nutrient density.

The local farms we partner with raise chickens, pigs and cattle on pasture and are free of hormones, steroids, antibiotics, and pesticides.

Sourcing protein rich foods locally supports Ohio farmers, strengthens regional food systems, and provides transparency in food sourcing for schools and families.

Our Initiative
Lamppost seeks to partner with local schools that desire better cafeteria food for their students. We facilitate the connection between schools and local regenerative farms, providing schools with access to the healthiest protein options possible. We prioritize access to protein, as we understand this is an important macronutrient for children that is often undervalued in school meals.

We realize the greatest challenge for schools to bring in healthy food, is cost. We strategize to overcome this obstacle and fundraise to support schools in providing students with high quality farmed food and in turn, support Ohio farmers.
